Heyo people
I've contacted four of you (Isen, Seaming, Cindy, Albert) about this workshop thing.
Basically, it's to put together a workshop custom-made to train Group Leaders for Dharma Camps.
I've discussed with some of you and the 30th MC, and so the theme is TEAM BUILDING.
We have to fix one date (in November after Seaming hands in here thesis?? When you finish?) to meet up to settle the details and allocation. Jacinta may join us, but it's kinda near the exams then. Let's fix the date here in this blog.
Also, we can bounce ideas around in the days leading to the meeting. Use the comments section to brainstorm on what we can do.
Firstly, I was thinking that the focus of this half-day workshop should be:
10% Theoretical knowledge on team-building. A mini-lecture on group dynamics etc.
30% Practical hands-on activities learning about team building. Possibly some game or something teaching about communication or making use of people's strengths?
30% Self-discovery. The only thing I seem to remember from those GL workshops were those personality tests. In discovering their own natural roles in groups, they may be more sensitive in identifying character types in their Camp Groups.
30% Bonding among the Group Leaders themselves so that they have coordination and cohesiveness to leade the camp. This can be through games, or teaching our BS songs with actions, etc.
Hope to see an active discussion kekekekke...

Okay, let me type something before i go away from my desk.
Will do in-depth into the details another time.
Some things to consider
1. the content seems to be too much for a half day workshop. how abt a one day workshop which has more breaks in between? we can start at 930 or 10 till 5pm.
2. dates for discussion: 7nov evening, 21nov evening, 8nov till 12pm, 22nov till 12pm
3. workshop can be separated into 2 main segments. segment 1: teambbuilding within the GLs (creating chemistry, teamskills, etc). segment 2: skills needed to lead their grp. some i can think of off hand - skills on facilitating/moderating discussion, handling grp dynamics/norms in the informal setting, handling possible challenges. throw more ideas in pls!
cindee
segment one will be us helping them with inter GL team building while segment two will be them learning skills on how they can conduct intragroup teambuilding
hope that's a clearer description
and of course, we have to include a small but not lengthy segment on protocols! plus a Q and A/ open discussion on dharma? can be light-hearted kind

Based on the content suggested, it could be done in half a day. However, we could only impart some concepts and a bit of practice to them. It would be quite rush, but at least game them an idea.
One day would be an ideal option and it would be impactful. Also, we could do more things. For instance, we could teach them legendary BS songs, dances and mini games to be passed down.
If possible, let's make it adventurous by having it in a park or resort. Haha...maybe park better, because it is FOC.
i've talked to zhang han, he said a full day should be no problem.
funny thing is, i actually mused about a park setting too... the problem would be logistics e.g. getting power, projector, whiteboard etc...
Prefer whole day training over half-day. If can have overnight at a chalet, but chalet should be expensive right?
Dates for discussion --> 7 nov evening! ASAP!
Songs a must-have! Must bring guitar also.
Normally if we just talk on theories and they just listen, it will be quite tired. It may be more interesting to say the theories very little, but talk about our experience more. Also, by different people leading different sections that would be fun too.
So we can have (for example):
1hr + 1hr = 2 hrs skills
1hr dharmic basics (need to prepare basic Q&As what if the group members ask?)
1hr games
1hr songs
Can alternate between the interactive part with the skill-y part.
Since we may have very new members, and we are very old members, why not we share how was Dharma Camp like during our days? Just for a short time. This is to give them an idea of what are the changes and experiences? To avoid repeating past mistakes..
ok so are we agreed that we might need a mini dharma session? cindy suggested a q n a for the GLs to discuss basic buddhism with us.
i think it's a good idea to show past camp videos and do a short sharing of experience.
i agree with songs and games, but i'd prefer to integrate them into the program. we can have songs in between sessions to break the monotony, while games are used to teach certain concepts (like team building in this case).
which goes to the point that their skills-learning should be mostly activities, less lecture.
where's isen??? let's hear his comments before we move on to exactly what skills to teach and how the program would look like.
Hi everyone, sorry Kwek now then reply!
Ok, CU guys on 7 Nov.. Park versus classroom, we can decide once we know the contents of the workshop.. Chalet i think no need haha, logistics, location and i guess we should make this workshop a little bit 'serious'.. Unless someone's house maybe still ok..
1) Half-day is a bit too short, yet I do feel full day can be a bit too long too. Depends, if we have enough activities that can add value to their to-be-responsibilities as GLs(in other words, little theories for sure). Let's stick to full day aniway since 3 of us preferred that. What i have in mind is 9 30/10am to 4/5pm, followed by dinner.
2)Theme, Team Building is fine.
3)Ok, we already have many good ideas of the main sections of the workshop(bonding among group leaders through games&songs; Cindy's explanation of segment 2; basic Dharma Q&A; Sharing of our own DC experiences; Video clips), so we ll finetune when we meet.. Just one note: so we need to come out with practical, hands-on, get them Involved activities/skills-learning.. i think we have all agreed there ll be very little theory/1 way interaction..
4)Just some specific examples(still must finetune):
a) 3 Most Desired Qualities of GLs
Everyone of us write on paper then later facilitator translate them into mahjong paper. Then all decide the 3 or 5 most desired qualities. There will be discussion as to why and in the process, we ll get everyone's share of opinions/experiences etc.
b) To hone the skills mentioned in Cindy's segment 2:
Role-playing Game
GLs ll encounter many different personalities and these personalities will come to GLs with their own set of opinions, beliefs, critics, comments, problems etc.. So, either we role play 1-to-1(I am participant, Kwek is GL, then during e camp, i passively participated in the games etc, i couldnt get along with the rest, i was very quiet, i was very sian, and other situations.. So what will/should Kwek say/do to me in such situations?).. This can do as group too, we(or even the GLs) come out with a set of common difficult situations, then they ll have to share how they are going to solve such situations.
4) Yes, self-discovery/personality test is a must i guess. I happened to just attend such workshop by professional co(Asiaworks, heard before? there are 2 more in singapore, forgot their names) and its good actually in helping us identify quickly what 'type' of person we are and we are dealing with.. i ll bring along e test, you all can do first also, its quite fun.. its copyrighted though so got to be careful..
Ok thats all from me first thanks!
thanks isen!!! cool cool... some good specifics suggested:
1) brainstorming 3 most important qualities of Gls - this can start the day off.
2) personality test - good that you have a copy to bring along! then we need not worry where to get one.
3) facilitation skills? there's a problem brought up by feedback on our current DC model of facilitating. will either feedback this through a blog post or via meet up.
I think we need a workshop on "understanding group dynamics". this can be combined with the facilitation skills workshop. sharing of experiences can come in here.
we can intersperse games, songs, video screening in between these 3 main courses. then we can round the day up with a dharma q n a session.
btw i have a book on personality types too (i was a fan of personality tests in JC...) i'll bring that along.
